Assessment of a Multiperiod Optimal Power Flow for Power System Operation

Abstract: The optimal power flow is an important tool for power system planning and power system operation. It is used in a 24-hour period to find an economic dispatch of generating units considering network restrictions. The optimal power flow provides valuable information about the operation cost, the transmission flows, the generation and the congestion in the system. This information is used by generators, planners, operators and regulators in order to analyze and take decisions about the system at short and long te… Show more

“…Electric power systems and gas systems have been extensively studied from different points of view. The first have been analyzed, through the optimal energy flow for the dispatch of the generation resources [15]- [17]. As a result, the formulation of the multi-period DC optimal power flow (DCOPF) has been enhanced in order to incorporate renewable energy generation's variability, considering factors such as electricity demand and wind availability uncertainty [18]- [21].…”

“…Since gas fired power plants produce energy for the electric system as a supplier, and at the same time, they consume natural gas, making it a requirement for the natural gas system. This is expressed in the (17).…”

“…The OPF is an optimization model to find the most economic dispatch of real power considering the network characteristics, the available generation, demand, and operational restrictions [7,8]. The OPF could be expressed as DCOPF or ACOPF [9] for a single period and multi-period evaluation [10].…”
