Traditionally, the one-to-one interaction between heterogeneous software has become the most commonly used method for multi-disciplinary collaboration in building projects, resulting in numerous data interfaces, different data formats, and inefficient collaboration. As the prevalence of Building Information Modeling (BIM) increases in building projects, it is expected that the exchange of Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)-based data can smoothly take place between heterogeneous BIM software. However, interoperability issues frequently occur during bidirectional data exchanges using IFC. Hence, a data interoperability experiment, including architectural, structural and MEP models from a practical project, was conducted to analyze these issues in the process of data import and re-export between heterogeneous software. According to the results, the fundamental causes of interoperability issues can be concluded as follows: (a) software tools cannot well interpret several objects belonging to other disciplines due to the difference in domain knowledge; (b) software tools have diverse methods to represent the same geometry, properties and relations, leading to inconsistent model data. Furthermore, this paper presents a suggested method for improving the existing bidirectional data sharing and exchange: BIM software tools export models using IFC format, and these IFC models are imported into a common IFC-based BIM platform for data interoperability.

In the last years the aec (architecture, engineering and construction) industry has been influenced by the development of building information modelling (bim). With the creation of complex systems, the need for efficient interoperability arises. Based on a study of bim interoperability dimensions and its levels, this research presents an interoperability assessment of bim system in the structural domain, especially considering cast-in-place concrete structures, since they present some special challenges for system interoperability. This assessment was conducted by experiments that imported and exported structural models and structural elements through a non-proprietarz standard for bim models (ifc- industry foundation classes). The experiments were conducted twice, with a five year gap from each other, so the evolution of the interoperability could be assessed as well. The results showed that some special characteristics must be considered in order to achieve efficient interoperability for cast-in-place concrete structures – these structures are monolithic and they have reinforcement steel bars that need detailing. Also, the research showed that in the five-year gap there were evolutions in interoperability, like in object identifiers, which had a considerable improvement. However, some of the major problems remain, such as overlapping of structural parts.

Using Geometry based Anomaly Detection to check the Integrity of IFC classifications in BIM Models

Although Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) provide standards for exchanging Building Information Modeling (BIM) data, authoring tools still require manual mapping between BIM entities and IFC classes. This leads to errors and omissions, which results in corrupted data exchanges that are unreliable and thus compromise the validity of IFC. This research explored precedent work by Krijnen and Tamke, who suggested ways to automate the mapping of IFC classes using a machine learning technique, namely anomaly detection. The technique incorporates geometric features of individual components to find outliers among entities in identical IFC classes. This research primarily focused on applying this approach on two architectural BIM models and determining its feasibility as well as limitations. Results indicated that the approach, while effective, misclassified outliers when an IFC class had several dissimilar entities. Another issue was the lack of entities for some specific IFC classes that prohibited the anomaly detection from comparing differences. Future research to improve these issues include the addition of geometric features, using novelty detection and the inclusion of a probabilistic graph model, to improve classification accuracy.
