“…According to local informants in the present study, there is a constant risk of schistosomiasis from contact with the river water, as confirmed by the high rates of contamination documented in the records available for the town of São Lourenço da Mata [35]. The establishment of endemic diseases, such as schistosomiasis, is related to a complex of biological, social, political, and cultural factors, which are expressed in the living conditions of the local population [36]. This reinforces the need for basic sanitation, not only for the recuperation of the environment, but also to guarantee public health.…”

“…Brazil is the country with the largest diversity of plants in the world, with approximately 55,000 plant species cataloged from an estimated total of between 350,000 and 550,000 species worldwide (Teles, Ferreira, & Carvalho, 2014). The properties of these medicinal plants are directly related to their essential oils (EOs), which are a complex mixture of various active substances, including terpenes, which are formed by isoprelene units and phenylpropane derivatives (Ascenção & Mouchrek Filho, 2013).…”

“…Studies in areas with low endemicity of schistosomiasis, such as the state of SP, are rare. The studies by Anaruma Filho et al 21 and Teles et al 22 show an exception, relating to Bananal and Campinas, respectively, regions where it was possible to rate schistosomiasis transmission sites, map parasite foci, and identify those where intense surveillance and control would be required.…”
