Assessment of future flood inundations under climate and land use change scenarios in the Ciliwung River Basin, Jakarta

Abstract: This study assessed flood inundation of the Ciliwung River Basin, Greater Jakarta to improve the urban water environment under climate change and unplanned urbanisation. The 1‐day maximum precipitation data for 50‐ and 100‐year return period under current and future climate conditions were used to assess the impact of climate change. Precipitation output of the MRI‐CGCM3, MIROC5, and HadGEM2‐ES General Circulation Models (GCMs) with RCP 4.5 and 8.5 emission scenario over periods 1985–2004 and 2020–2039 represe… Show more

“…However, the approaches applied today are focused on linking these two contradicting points of view on environment functioning. In recent literature the solutions proposed are aimed at assessment or planning of flood control strategies satisfying sustainability, e.g., Lumbroso et al [55], Meight and Barlett [56], Mishra et al [57]. More specific research is conducted when such hydro-structures as dams and weirs are considered to be important elements of the water system, e.g., Gao et al [58], Chen et al [59].…”

“…In the fields of hydrology and river engineering, there has been much research into estimating the flood magnitude using frequency analysis and predicting, or recreating the inundation area using numerical simulation [18][19][20][21]. In response to advances in numerical simulation and hydrological frequency analysis, there has been research into appropriate land use for flood damage mitigation, and the configuration of the flood inundation area [22][23][24]. However, numerical simulation and frequency analysis have problems such as the uncertainty of certain scales, limitations on the number of external forces, and the dependence of the calculation results on the boundary conditions [25][26][27].…”
