The main aim of groundwater studies is to assess the physical and chemical characterizations of water-bearing layers. The study area has been chosen to be in south of Iraq within Basrah governorate. Depending on 86 wells, the aquifer has been formed by Dibdibba formation in the west while both Dibdibba and alluvial fan of Wadi AL-Batin in the east and northeastern part of the area. The aquifer has been investigated during field work where geographical position, elevations, static water levels, depths, thicknesses, maximum yields as well as water sampling were carried out. Depending on hydrogeological and hydrochemical properties of the aquifer, the promising zone of useful exploration of groundwater has been located to be the west of Zubair and Safwan towns. Physicochemical analysis of groundwater aquifer is a brackish to saline water. Groundwater quality of aquifer is not recommended to be used for human and irrigation purposes, even so the farmers have been using this water for irrigation and animal purposes depending on soil nature and plants.

O Sistema Aquífero Guarani (SAG) é considerado um dos maiores depósitos de água subterrânea do planeta e a maior parte de sua área está situada em território brasileiro. Em Ribeirão Preto, SP, o SAG aflora na zona leste do município, que o utiliza para o abastecimento urbano. Por outro lado, a presença de passivos ambientais e a impermeabilização do solo causada pela urbanização são uma ameaça à conservação do SAG no município, necessitando de medidas de gestão ambiental para garantir a qualidade e a quantidade da água do aquífero. Com vistas à conservação do SAG, o presente trabalho objetivou analisar a potencialidade de aplicação de espaços territoriais especialmente protegidos (ETEPs), tais como reservas legais (RL), área de preservação permanente (APP), Unidades de Conservação (UC), em áreas consideradas prioritárias pelo estudo de localização realizado por Bircol (2012). Os resultados apontam para um mosaico de ETEPs designados em função das características de cada local. Das 30 áreas estudadas, cinco foram enquadradas como UCs de Proteção Integral, oito em UCs de Uso Sustentável, oito em Zonas de Proteção Máxima (ZPM) e nove em parques urbanos públicos destinados ao lazer e à educação ambiental. Este trabalho mostrou que a instituição de ETEPs pode representar uma alternativa para buscar a conservação de uma das maiores reservas de água subterrânea do mundo, o Sistema Aquífero Guarani, compatibilizando a proteção com o desenvolvimento econômico e social.

Aims: To evaluate the potential for using a novel chemiluminescence‐based enzyme assay for rapid detection of enterococci in water contaminated with faecal waste. Methods and Results: The novel assay (EntLight) was based on the enzymatic hydrolysis of the chemiluminescent 1,2‐dioxetane [(4‐methoxy‐4(3‐β‐d‐glucoside‐4‐chlorophenyl)]spiro[1,2‐dioxetane‐3‐1,3‐tricyclo[7·3·1·02,7]tridec‐2,7‐ene] specific for β‐d‐glucosidase. The specificity of the proposed EntLight assay was characterized using 26 different Enterococcus strains and 10 bacterial genera other than Enterococcus. With an analysis time of ≤8 h, the assay was found to be sensitive and specific. Validation experiments were carried out using water samples contaminated with raw municipal wastewater in comparison with qPCR and ISO standard methods. EntLight was successfully applied to detect enterococci in contaminated water within ≤8 h, and the proposed assay correlated well with both qPCR and ISO standard methods (R2 > 0·776). Conclusions: EntLight can be applied to rapid and simple detection of viable enterococci in water contaminated with faecal matter. Significance and Impact of the Study: The novel EntLight assay and qPCR have the potential to be used as methods for early warning (1–7 h) of faecal pollutions in different water types.
