Association between triglyceride-glucose index and risk of cardiovascular disease among postmenopausal women

Abstract: Objective We aimed to examine the association of triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) with risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) among postmenopausal women. Methods A total of 7741 participants met the inclusion criteria, and were included in the analysis. The TyG index was calculated as ln (triglyceride [mg/dL] × fasting blood glucose [mg/dL]/2). The participants were classified into four groups by the quartiles of TyG index, and the Q1 group was used… Show more

“…Sex is a crucial determinant in CVD development and progression, with growing attention on cardiovascular risk in women. Sex-specific analyses revealed a more pronounced association between IR and SCA in women, aligning with observations from previous studies indicating a stronger link between IR and adverse cardiovascular events in women [20,37,38]. Notably, consistent findings were observed across RCS and AFT models.…”

“…Notably, the TyG index has proven to be a reliable tool for assessing the progression of coronary artery calcification and determining the severity of coronary artery disease [33][34][35]. It is also positively correlated with the risk of heart failure, hypertension, atrial fibrillation and myocardial infarction [36][37][38][39][40]. Similarly, BMI serves as an indicator of both obesity and IR.…”

“…In females heart disease onset occurs much later than men, due to vascular protective action of estrogen, which prevents atherosclerosis. Estrogen binding to receptors (ERs) promote vasodilation and reduce the response of blood vessels to the progression of atherosclerosis (16). The association of high TyG index with serum fasting triglycerides and cholesterol is also significant showing a p-value of <0.001, while LDL and HDL were non-significant.From this study, we can surely determine that triglyceride glucose index is a reliable marker of insulin resistance which is responsible for poor action of insulin at target organs.…”

“…Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis. Decreased high density lipoprotein (HDL)-C levels and increased triglyceride levels cause metabolic disturbances [2].A higher triglyceride index is a marker of insulin resistance associated with a higher risk of coronary arterial disease(CAD) events, especially in the elderly and postmenopausal women [5].…”
