Association of cord blood platelet characteristics and hematopoietic progenitor cells

Abstract: Mean PLT volume correlated with current markers of CB hematopoietic potential and is potentially useful for evaluating CB collections for banking. The question of the clinical significance of PLT characteristics in CB transplantation remains unanswered.

“…The present study shows that the MPV of CB correlates with TNC and CD34+ cell counts and the ratio of CD34+ cells to TNCs in the processed CB units, which is consistent with the results of previous studies [4, 6]. Our study is significant because of the large number of CB units analyzed from a Korean CB bank.…”

“…Mean platelet volume (MPV) has been reported to correlate with TNC and CD34+ cell counts, suggesting that MPV may be useful as a predictor of hematopoietic potency and transplantation outcomes [4]. Therefore, we retrospectively analyzed a large number of CB units to ascertain the relationship between MPV and hematopoietic parameters and other variables, including TNC and CD34+ cell counts, hemoglobin and platelet concentrations, WBC count, and maternal and neonatal factors.…”

“…However, the CD34 þ cell concentration was not associated with Hb, the RBC concentration or Hct, although there was an association with PLT characteristics, as described earlier. 16 Mode of delivery CB MPV was associated with Hb after both vaginal delivery (r ¼ 0.26, P ¼ 0.0389) and Cesarean section (r ¼ 0.22, P ¼ 0.026).…”

“…The neonatal (placental) blood cell counts are speculated to reflect the general hematopoietic activity. In an earlier study concerning the same samples from healthy term infants as this study, 16 CB MPV and PLT count were associated with markers of hematopoietic progenitor potential (CD34 þ cells and colonyforming cells). Further significant associations included those between MPV or PLT count and Hb in this study.…”
