Association of herpesviruses in the aqueous humor of patients with serpiginous choroiditis: a polymerase chain reaction-based study

Abstract: VZV and HSV DNA were detected in a subset of patients with serpiginous choroiditis, suggesting that these viruses may function in the pathogenesis of this disease.

“…17,72,73 Similarly, serpiginous choroiditis is described in association with tuberculosis, varicella zoster virus, and herpes simplex virus. 74 Interestingly, antiviral treatments do not improve the clinical outcomes of patients with serpiginous choroiditis, suggesting that infections may trigger disease onset but are not the underlying cause of retinal damage. 75 Other pathogenic mechanisms have been proposed for WDS.…”

“…Association of herpes viruses in the aqueous humor of patients with serpiginous choroiditis have been studied based on PCR results by Priya et al 24 In our patients, antiviral drugs were given in cases that were PCR positive for herpes viruses from the aqueous aspirate, along with systemic steroids. We suggest anterior chamber tap for PCR for viruses in those patients who have cells in the anterior chamber.…”

“…4e7 Although several infectious or noninfectious causes of MSC have been recognized, 8 laboratory evidence for Mycobacterium tuberculosis or other causative agents is lacking. There are isolated reports of patients with serpiginous choroiditis with evidence of M. tuberculosis, 2,9,10 herpes, 11 or toxoplasmosis 12 that has been shown using molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR).…”
