Association of the IL-10 polymorphisms and periodontitis: a meta-analysis

Abstract: No clear consensus has been reached regarding the association of IL-10 polymorphisms and periodontitis. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis of case-control studies and a systemic review in an effort to systematically summarize the existing knowledge. Studies were identified by searching PubMed database until December 2011. IL-10 -1082 (-1087) A>G, -819 (-824) C>T and -592 (-597) C>A polymorphisms were included in the present meta-analysis. We calculated the specific odds ratios along with their 95 % confid… Show more

“…Patient carriers of the IL-6 GG and IL-10 CA or IL-10 AA genotype were considered susceptible to periodontal disease. 23,24 The hypothesis of the present investigation was that individuals susceptible to periodontal disease would demonstrate an increased risk of periodontal disease progression and persisting or recurrent disease activity following treatment as has been determined by previously accepted and validated criteria. 26 We believe this is the first study that investigated this hypothesis.…”

“…30 More specifically, both IL-6 -572 G/C and IL-10 -592 C/A polymorphisms have been associated with an increased protein expression and inflammatory response. 23,31 In the present study, we utilized drops of blood from patients with chronic periodontitis. Genotyping of the polymorphisms in IL-6 (rs1800796) and IL-10 (rs1800872) genes were performed using the real-time polymerase chain reaction technology.…”

“…A large number of single nucleotide polymorphisms have been identified in the IL-10 gene promoter (17). Of interest are the polymorphisms at -1082 (-1087), -819 (-824) and -592 (-597) (18). However, the presence of an association between IL-10 gene polymorphisms and clinical manifestations of chronic and aggressive periodontitis is controversial.…”

“…Some studies have illustrated that the IL-10 rs1800896 polymorphism was correlated with enhanced risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma [25] and gastric cancer [26], diabetic nephropathy [27], and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma [28]. However, non significant correlation between the polymorphism and polycystic ovary syndrome [29], cervical cancer [30], periodontal diseases [31] has been revealed. This means that IL-10 is disease-specific and whether it has an influence on HNC risk remains a confusing due to the inconsistent results of published case-control studies.…”
