Associative Memory and Belief Formation

Abstract: This paper experimentally studies the role of associative memory for belief formation. Realworld information signals are often embedded in memorable contexts. Thus, today's news, and the contexts they are embedded in, may cue the selective retrieval of similar past news and hence contribute to the widely documented pattern of expectation overreaction. Based on a stylized version of models of associative memory in the literature, we develop a simple and tightly controlled experimental setup in which participant… Show more

“…9 Our findings relate to an active literature connecting salience to belief updating (e.g. Bordalo et al, 2012Bordalo et al, , 2019Enke et al, 2019;Hanna et al, 2014), extending that logic to the effects of informational interventions themselves. They also qualify the interpretation of previous results about the effects of informational interventions, particularly in the context of communication with parents (Bergman, 2017;Dizon-Ross, 2019;Jensen, 2010).…”

“…Our findings confirm that the trade-off effect was restricted to high-complexity conditions since no difference between neutral and focal conditions were reported in the low-complexity condition. High-complexity conditions may have benefited from greater association ( Luck and Vogel, 1997 ; Rosen et al, 2018 ; Robin and Olsen, 2019 ; Enke et al, 2020 ) and/or greater elaboration ( Drivdahl et al, 2009 ; Migita et al, 2011 ; Nawa and Ando, 2019 ; Rubin et al, 2019 ). By revealing a modulation of the trade-off effect by picture complexity, our study suggests that such effects may be optimal in high-complexity conditions when memory is evaluated immediately.…”

“…They incorporate the fact that such a process is imperfect and depends on the particular features of the current choices, leading to an asymmetric retrieval of past signals. Enke, Schwerter, and Zimmermann (2020) provide experimental evidence on the role of associative memory for beliefs formation. We do not consider associative memory but show that the imperfectness of the memorization process affects individuals' ability to exercise selective recall.…”
