Attenuation of the blood pressure response to exogenous angiotensin I after oral administration of benazepril to healthy adult horses

Abstract: Attenuation of the rise in SBP in response to ANG-I after administration of benazepril is modest in horses despite adequate serum ACE inhibition. A dose of 1 mg/kg bwt would be recommended for future investigations of benazepril for the management of cardiovascular diseases in horses.

“…The level of serum ACE inhibition in horses with valvular regurgitation obtained in the present study is similar to that previously documented in healthy horses receiving the same dose of benazepril [15]. The mild but statistically significant decrease in ACE inhibition from day 7 to day 28 in the benazepril group was unexpected and suggests the possibility of resistance to ACE blockade over time.…”

“…The dose and dosing interval were based on the results of a prior study [15]. Horses (n = 11) were stratified based on primary haemodynamic abnormality (MR or AR) and horses in each stratum were randomised to receive benazepril or a placebo with the aid of a computer software (MedCalc Statistical Software) a .…”
