Automatically Constructing Semantic Web Services from Online Sources

Abstract: Abstract. The work on integrating sources and services in the Semantic Web assumes that the data is either already represented in RDF or OWL or is available through a Semantic Web Service. In practice, there is a tremendous amount of data on the Web that is not available through the Semantic Web. In this paper we present an approach to automatically discover and create new Semantic Web Services. The idea behind this approach is to start with a set of known sources and the corresponding semantic descriptions an… Show more

“…2 For the Date, ISBN, Phone types, the distance function simply returns 0 if the two elements are equal, 1 if otherwise. For numeric types, the computation is more involved, as fT (·, ·) measures the ratio of objects that differ more than a predetermined relative threshold ρ.…”

“…DEIMOS [2] is an end-to-end system that, given a seed website and some background knowledge of the domain, discovers related websites and builds semantic web services from them. The system relies on different techniques due to the goal of dealing with services instead of sources as in our case.…”

“…Our work can be considered as an extension of the work presented in [13,14], in which the development of domain-independent approaches to semantically label Web services is described. The authors propose to automatically learn the semantics of information sources labelling the input and output parameters used by the source with semantic types of the user's domain model.…”

“…Existing Web infrastructures support the publication and access to a tremendous amount of Web data sources, some of which can be labeled and converted into Semantic Web Services by using existing annotation tools like the one proposed by Ambite et al [3]. Once a large dataset of Semantic Web Services become available, users require techniques to effectively select the services that meet their requirements.…”

“…In this paper, we use the recent approach of Ambite et al [3] that describes services as views on the generic concepts of the ontology following the Local-As-View (LAV) approach that is widely used in integration systems [21], instead of the traditional Global-As-View (GAV) approach where the generic concepts are expressed in terms of the services. The adoption of the LAV approach instead of GAV is not accidental.…”
