Avian influenza, non‐tariff measures and the poultry exports of China

Abstract: This paper focuses on the direct impact of avian influenza outbreaks and the impact of the consequent non‐tariff measures (NTMs) on the international poultry trade. Using monthly export data from China and its 122 poultry importing countries, a random‐effect gravity model has been adopted. Emphasising the agri‐food trade in a global value chain context, the research analysis distinguishes between ‘agri‐food goods’ (mostly uncooked poultry products) and ‘processed goods’ (mostly cooked poultry products). The re… Show more

“…The model has been widely applied in the estimations and projections of aggregate trade. Several authors, for instances, Nanovsky (2019), Zhou et al (2019), Li, Sun and Long (2019), Shahriar, Qian and Kea (2019), Soeng and Cuyvers (2018), Narayan and Nguyen (2016), Atif et al (2017), Filippini and Molini (2003), Poncet (2006), Batra (2006); Zhou et al (2019); Mitra et al (2018), Gashi et al (2016); Hasiner and Yu (2018) and Ghazalian (2019) applied the model in their empirical works of international trade. The literature is, however, scant in the analysis of the Chinese OFDI along the BRI through an application of the gravity model.…”

“…Third, the study would enrich the current literature on the commodity-specific gravity model of agricultural exports. Presently, there are some studies on the export determinants of product/agricultural commodities such as coffee (NSABIMANA & TIRKASO, 2019), rice (BUI & CHEN, 2015;KEA et al, 2019), coffee and rice (NGUYEN, 2020), soybeans (BOEREMA et al, 2016), wine (CASTILLO et al, 2016), poultry (ZHOU et al, 2019), meat (SHAHRIAR et al, 2019a, leather and textile (JORDAAN & EITA, 2012;RAHMAN et al, 2019), creative goods (DONG & TRUONG, 2019), and forest products (NASRULLAH et al, 2020). Lastly, this study provided new insights and allowed us to derive some policy implications about the development and sustainability of cocoa export in Nigeria.…”

“…China has been a major exporter of poultry products, the trade in which may spread domestic avian influenza virus to importing countries ( 34 ). Furthermore, there is a wide range and distribution of bird migrations within and in proximity to China, which possibly causes the spread of domestic avian influenza to neighbouring countries ( 6 ).…”
