Bacillus huizhouensis sp. nov., isolated from a paddy field soil

Abstract: A Gram-stain positive, facultative aerobic bacterium, designated as strain GSS03(T), was isolated from a paddy field soil. The cells were observed to be endospore forming, rod-shaped and motile with flagella. The organism was found to grow optimally at 35 °C at pH 7.0 and in the presence of 1 % NaCl. The strain was classified as a novel taxon within the genus Bacillus on the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses. The closest phylogenetic relatives were identified as Bacillus psychrosaccharolyticus DSM … Show more

“…Research done by Li et al (2014) [30] shows the strain GSS03T was placed in a cluster within the genus Bacillus based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences (1460 bp). These data, which were obtained using the same universal bacterial primer set, 27F and 1492R as in this study, also suggest that strain GSS03T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus .…”

“…Cell and colony morphology were explored using a transmission electron microscope (JEM-1400; Jeol) as described previously. 53,54 In addition, toluene degradation experiments were performed in 150 mL brown glass bottles containing 20 mL of MM medium, and bacterial cells were adjusted to approximately 5 × 10 6 colony-forming units/mL with the dilution plate counting method. 5,55 After the bottles were sealed with rubber stoppers and aluminum seals, 1 μL of unlabeled toluene was added into the bottles as a carbon source.…”

“…The genus Bacillus has been limited to only the members of the Subtilis and Cereus clade of species [2]. There are 16 species in the genus Peribacillus with validly published names (https://lpsn.dsmz.de/genus/peribacillus), most species of this genus have been isolated from soil [3–10] and plant tissues [11, 12]. Members of this genus are generally Gram-positive or Gram-variable, facultatively anaerobic or aerobic, cells are motile, the temperature range at which growth can occur is 3–45 °C.…”
