Bandwidth Enhancement of a Wide Slot Using Fractal-Shaped Sierpinski

Abstract: A wideband fractal slot antenna is proposed, designed, and fabricated in this communication. The broadband characteristic is achieved by introducing a Sierpinski fractal into a square wide slot without increasing the overall antenna size. A simple microstrip line is used to excite the Sierpinski-based slot. As the iteration order of the Sierpinski square radiator increases, the number of resonance increases, and the bandwidth of the slot antenna is enhanced. From the measured results, the 10 dB reflection coef… Show more

“…This fractal antenna is an iterative model of step shape from which a square patch is removed. The basic structure of the square patch is 54x54mm 2 as shown in Fig1. The substrate thickness is 1.6mm, the loss tangent is 0.02 and the material used for the antenna is FR4 with dielectric constant 4.4 [8]. The ground plane is formed by 54x2mm 2 .…”

“…There are various impedance matching and feeding techniques used to achieve wide bandwidth [3][4][5]. Using some narrow slots or removing some portion from the resonators such as patch loaded with U-slot [6,7], W-slot [8], V-slot [9], T-slot [10] and fractal shaped patch [11,12] provides a compact antenna with enhanced bandwidth. An asymmetric E-shaped patch and proximity coupled patch antenna [13,14] also provide improved bandwidth, but the overall size is compromised.…”
