Behaviour of Masonry Mortars Fabricated With Recycled Aggregate Towards Moisture

Abstract: One of the most frequent defect in building is appearance of moisture. Due to the growing social awareness and environmental policy, it becomes necessary to evaluate the behaviour of a new construction materials regarding this kind of defects. This paper studies the behaviour of masonry mortars incorporating three types of recycled aggregates: concrete, ceramic and mixed, with dosages 1:3 and 1:4 to be compared to the behaviour of traditional mortars in terms of absorption by capillarity, rainwater penetration… Show more

“…For the elaboration of this study, four different types of fibers have been used, which can be classified according to whether their origin is synthetic or natural. The synthetic fibers used are: alkali-resistant glass fiber whose main components are: SiO 2 (62%), ZrO 2 (17.3%) and Na 2 O (14.30%), basalt fiber chemically composed of: SiO 2 (47%), Al 2 O 3 (13%), CaO (12%), MgO (10%) and polypropylene fiber [44][45][46], supplied by the company SIKA, Madrid, Spain. The natural fiber used is wood fiber from Scots pine consisting of sawdust fibers supplied by Salesianos Carabanchel High School, Madrid, Spain.…”

“…Based on this regulation, the hydraulic conglomerate used in this research is of the CEM II/B-L-32.5 N type. It is a cement made up of clinker, limestone and up to 5% of additions [42], very commonly used on site for economic reasons and for its good technical performance [43]. Table 1 shows the chemical composition of this material obtained by X-ray fluorescence technique.…”

“…These mortars with recycled aggregate are characterized by a lower density, which leads to a lower compressive strength compared to traditional mortars [24]. In addition, this lower density is related to a lower compactness of the mortar matrix, so they have higher capillary water absorption coefficients [25]. On the other hand, the higher fines content of recycled aggregates has an impact on the greater demand for mixing water in this type of mortar to obtain a plastic consistency [26].…”
