“…Our results are consistent with the findings of a previous study comparing MDA levels between fertile and postmenopausal age groups [19]. Furthermore, two recent reports, investigating the effect of surgical menopause on oxidant and antioxidant status of perimenopausal patients, revealed that MDA levels were increased after surgical menopause [18,20].…”

“…Although an increase in plasma levels of MDA, a marker of lipid peroxidation, in the postmenopausal period has been previously demonstrated [18][19][20], to the best of our knowledge this has been the first study to demonstrate menopause-related increase in plasma AOPP levels -a novel marker of oxidative protein damage reported to be associated with increased cardiovascular risk. In our study, mean plasma AOPP levels were significantly higher in postmenopausal as compared to premenopausal women, suggesting that it can be used as a marker in studies investigating cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal period.…”

“…Analytically, serum concentrations of inflammatory cytokines and pro-oxidant biomarkers such as oxidized lipoproteins (ox LDL), 4-hydroxynenal and MDA were found to be higher in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women (87). In contrast, GSH and glutathione transferase (GST), which are effective in the removal of free radicals, are reduced in oocytes with age (88).…”
