Believing in Make‐Believe: Looking at Theater as a Metaphor for Psychotherapy

Abstract: In this essay, I explore the theatrical dimensions of psychotherapy. I argue that many of the historical, practice-related, and conceptual connections between theater and therapy often are only alluded to in the literature, but rarely made explicit. In doing so, however, it seems apparent that, as a metaphor for psychotherapy, theater perhaps offers a more appropriate fit than those narrative and conversational metaphors that have been employed so far. Proposing that theater is, in fact, the metaphor on which … Show more

“…In this manner, metaphor has provided both a linguistic tool to facilitate empathy and an intervention technique with a history of therapeutic value (Bryant, Katz, Becvar, & Becvar, 1988;Cirillo & Crider, 1995;Haley, 1973;Hoskins & Leseho, 1996;S. “…Resistance to traditional psychotherapy precludes short-term intervention, as substantial time is needed to build trust and rapport with such youth. Through adolescent-guided symbolic play, teens are able step back from their personal, family, and group experience and use metaphor to more freely articulate their traumatic experiences (MacCormack, 1997) without the feeling of overintrusion risked by a directive or interpretive stance (Wilson & Ryan, 2002). This may allow more rapid engagement and therapeutic benefit.…”
