Benign Metastasizing Leiomyoma of the Lung

Abstract: A 44-year-old woman was found to have an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray during a regular health checkup, and visited our department. Chest computed tomography showed multiple nodular shadows in both lungs. The patient had no history of neoplasm except for myomectomy for uterine leiomyoma 6 years previously. Eighteen months later, the nodules showed a gradual increase in size, and video-assisted thoracoscopic biopsy of a nodule was performed. Histopathologically, the pulmonary nodule was composed of benign sm… Show more

“…Consistent with this possibility, a recent study found uterine leiomyomas in every LAM patient studied, with microscopic uterine LAM lesions in all but one patient (25). Furthermore, in the less aggressive lung disease, benign metastasizing leiomyoma, myometrial cells metastasize to the lungs (62,63). We therefore propose that loss of Tsc2 in myometrial cells might result in a more aggressive form of benign metastasizing leiomyoma that, in the presence of estradiol, leads to proliferating myometrial tumors and possibly LAM.…”

“…Benign metastasizing leiomyoma is an extrauterine smooth muscle tumor that occurs in patients with a current or prior history of uterine leiomyoma. [6][7][8] It has been reported in multiple locations, with the lung being the most common metastatic site, [6][7][8] but metastases have also been reported in the skull base, 9 spine, 9…”

“…e. Leiomioma benigno metastizante. Muestra nódulos múltiples y bilaterales de musculatura lisa, histológicamente benigna, localizados en los pulmones aunque también puede encontrarse en ganglios linfáticos o cavidad abdominal (12,13). Esta lesión parece originarse o asociarse con leiomiomas uterinos resecados muchos años antes de la enfermedad extrauterina (2,14).…”
