Beta Cell Function, Insulin Resistance and Low Grade Systemic Inflammation in Myanmar Adults with Different Categories of Glucose Tolerance

Abstract: Objective. The aim of the study was to evaluate the beta cell function, insulin sensitivity and low grade systemic inflammation in different categories of glucose tolerance in Myanmar.Methodology. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 202 Myanmar subjects of both sexes, aged between 45-65 years old. Fasting blood glucose, insulin, C-peptide and hs-CRP levels were measured. A 75g oral glucose tolerance test was performed. Insulin resistance and beta cell function were assessed by homeostasis-model-assessment… Show more

“…9 Study done by Thazin et al in Myanmar quoted that increased fasting c-peptide was significantly associated with prediabetes. 13 Though microalbuminuria and elevated c-peptide were prevalent in our study population, none of the study participants had fundus retinopathic changes. Similar studies done in Andhra Pradesh and Chennai showed, retinopathy was present in 8% and 6% respectively of the prediabetic population.…”

“…Most of the subjects had low serum zinc levels (76%). The median value of HOMA-IR was 0.54 (0.22-2.21) and most subjects had optimal HOMA-IR value (86.7%) compared to cut-off established by Than et al 14 from a study in Myanmar. Spearman correlation test was conducted between serum zinc and HOMA-IR.…”
