Beyond Antibiotics: Photo/Sonodynamic Approaches for Bacterial Theranostics

Abstract: Rapid evolution and propagation of multidrug resistance among bacterial pathogens are outpacing the development of new antibiotics, but antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) provides an excellent alternative. This treatment depends on the interaction between light and photoactivated sensitizer to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are highly cytotoxic to induce apoptosis in virtually all microorganisms without resistance concern. When replacing light with low-frequency ultrasonic wave to activat… Show more

“…According to scientific literature, we are now witnessing a rapid evolution of bacteria and a tremendous increase in multidrug-resistant strains largely due to selective pressure and a long-term interaction between the applied antibiotics and bacteria [ 115 , 116 , 117 ]. It seems that antibiotics have been prescribed too often and many times perhaps even inappropriately.…”

“…To further improve the performance of inkjet printing, ZnO UV photodetector is still a difficult issue. There have been many researches investigated the photodetectors modified by metallic NPs to improve the performance [17][18][19][20][21]. However, none of them has fabricated metallic NPmodified ZnO photodetectors by all-inkjet-printing method and the advantages of inkjet printing cannot be fully utilized.…”

“…[124] Synergistic effects of LFU and PS against planktonic bacterial and yeast cells are demonstrated in Table 7 and against biofilms -in Table 8. More detailed descriptions of the mechanisms, goals and current progress in the application of sonodynamic methods for bacterial theranostics can be found in the review of Pang et al [125]…”
