Understanding the differences and similarities in the activities of tourists from various cultures is important for tourism managers to develop appropriate plans and strategies that could support urban tourism marketing and managements. However, tourism managers still face challenges in obtaining such understanding because the traditional approach of data collection, which relies on survey and questionnaires, is incapable of capturing tourist activities at a large scale. In this article, we present a method for the study of tourist activities based on a new type of data, venue check-ins. The effectiveness of the presented approach is demonstrated through a case study of a major tourism country, France. Analysis based on a large-scale data set from 19 tourism cities in France reveals interesting differences and similarities in the activities of tourists from 14 markets (countries). Valuable insights are provided for various urban tourism applications.

The identification of strategic business partnerships can potentially provide competitive advantages for businesses; however, due to the dynamics and uncertainty present in business environments , this task could be challenging. To help businesses in this task , this study presents a similarity model between businesses that consider the opinions of users on content shared by businesses on social media. Thus, this model captures significant virtual relationships among businesses that are generated by users in the virtual world. Besides, we propose an algorithm for detecting business communities in the considered model. We also propose an algorithm to identify possible business outliers in the detected communities, which could represent an automatic way to identify non-obvious relations that might deserve particular attention of business owners. By exploring approximately 280 million user reactions on Facebook, we show that our results could favor the development of, for example, a new strategic business partnership recommendation service.

Identifying tourist-functional relations of urban places through Foursquare from Barcelona

Previous research has mainly focused on spatial relations among tourist attractions in urban areas. However, few studies have examined the functional relations between tourist attractions and other urban places (i.e. the flows of tourists between them). Therefore, this study focuses on quantification of the tourist-functional relations among Places of Interest (POIs) using Foursquare data from Barcelona. This represents an effort to highlight the important functional closeness between different types of POIs whose significance is not usually obvious from their spatial relationships. In order to quantify these functional relationships, this paper classifies Foursquare POIs into 22 categories according to their different usages and constructs a matrix of usage-flows to depict the connections among these different usages. A model of interaction values is introduced to describe the strength of relations and identify the dominant tourist usages. The results confirm that the functional centroids differ from these spatial distributions which only focused around tourist attractions. In addition to tourist attractions, places in the categories of Restaurants, Transport, and Hotels play important roles in functional relationship of tourism. The typical urban usages of tourists can be distinguished by the interaction values between these categories. Our model provides a practical method to quantify the interlinkage of usages of POIs based on tourist flows. In particular, LBSN data has potential as a method to observe the tourist-functional relations among places.
