Biodegradation of mixture containing monohydroxybenzoate isomers by Acinetobacter calcoaceticus

Abstract: A bacterial strain capable of utilizing a mixture containing 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (2-HBA), 3-hydroxybenzoic acid (3-HBA) and 4-hydroxybenzoic (4-HBA) acid was isolated through enrichment from a soil sample. Based on 16SrDNA sequencing, the microorganism was identified as Acinetobacter calcoaceticus. The sequence of biodegradation of the three isomers when provided as a mixture (0.025%, w/v each) was elucidated. The dihydroxylated metabolites formed from the degradation of 2-HBA, 3-HBA and 4-HBA were identifie… Show more

“…Microbial degradation of phenolic compounds ( Yu, 2001 ) is cost-effective and environmentally friendly ( De et al, 2006 ). Strain 11 of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus is able to utilize a phenolic mixture of PHBA, 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, and 3-hydroxybenzoic acid in medium ( Prathibha and Sumathi, 2008 ). A. calcoaceticus DSM586 can grow on PHBA as sole carbon source and also has a capacity of degrading FA in medium ( Delneri et al, 1995 ).…”

“…Acinetobacter are known to degrade a broad variety of hydrocarbons, like n-alkanes [43], aromatic compounds [44] and diesel oil [45]. Due to their profound adaptability and metabolic versatility, Acinetobacter species can be widely found in soil [46], seawater [47], waste water [48], sewage [49], oil [50] and clinical specimens [51].…”
