Summary This article reviews the various materials used for the construction and fabrication of biogas digesters. The reviewed materials include bricks, cement, plastics, reinforced fiber, and metals, which find its application in household biogas digester design. The review aims to provide and help energy engineers and researchers as well as stakeholders in the selection of an appropriate material for the construction and fabrication of biogas digesters. More also, the present study will present information on the challenges associated with each material and how to minimize it to enhance the development of biogas digesters technology. Detailed information on the gas yields resulting from the biogas digesters constructed and fabricated using bricks, cement, plastics, and metals as well as material used for biogas storage are reviewed. Though, findings show that most local and household biogas digesters were constructed with bricks and cement due to their rigidity, robustness, and lifespan. However, in areas where logistics and transportation may prove challenging, the likely substitute is soft bag digester owing to the light weight.

The market for biogas production has been increasing every year all over the world. The use of biogas as an energy vector is accomplished through the most diverse applications, such as direct burning (thermal energy), internal combustion engines, and fuel cells. Besides direct applications, biogas can be used as a raw material for producing high added-value products, such as molecular hydrogen and renewable hydrocarbons, through a new enterprise concept, the biorefineries. Purity and quality control are determinant factors that enable the decision-making regarding the end use of biogas. Physical, chemical, and biological methods can be used in biogas upgrading processes as well as a combination of different techniques. This review aims to deepen the knowledge about relevant technologies for biogas purification. It also addresses the most efficient and feasible methods, challenges to be overcome, and main demands for future studies. Therefore, the presentation, in a detailed way, of the synergistic effects caused by components contained in natural biogas and the combinatorial methods for removing these contaminants, differentiates this from other works that approach only the purification techniques but do not point out their problems and causes more comprehensively. Thus, studies related to the combined effects of contaminants would be interesting in future works.

In a developing country such as Pakistan, adopting biogas technology is a complicated process. The government has taken several steps to address energy issues by increasing biogas facilities. This research seeks to identify the major barriers to the deployment of biogas plants. Respondents were selected using the snowball sampling method. As a result, 79 adopters of biogas plants participated. Utilizing a structured questionnaire, primary data were collected. Hypotheses were evaluated using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Study results demonstrate that all influencing factors are favorably associated with implementing biogas technology, minimizing energy crises, and achieving cost-cutting objectives. In addition, the findings show that properly reducing economic and governmental barriers, encourage farmers to use biogas plants productively and substantially. To build biogas facilities, the government should adopt an economic strategy, owner training, day-to-day operations, and professional technical assistance.
