Biologic Data of Cynomolgus Monkeys Maintained under Laboratory Conditions

Abstract: The cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) is a well-known non-human primate species commonly used in non-clinical research. It is important to know basal clinical pathology parameters in order to have a reference for evaluating any potential treatment-induced effects, maintaining health status among animals and, if needed, evaluating correct substantiative therapies. In this study, data from 238 untreated cynomolgus monkeys (119 males and 119 females of juvenile age, 2.5 to 3.5 years) kept under laboratory c… Show more

“…Previous study also reported that the mean levels of ALP concentrations were significantly higher in boys than girls, indicating that similar changes in ALP was also reported in humans [27]. In addition, sex-related difference in GGT levels have been demonstrated in cynomolgus monkeys [28]. Likewise, we observed that the concentrations of ALP and GGT were significantly higher in males than in females in both cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys aged between 48 and 96 months.…”

“…30,31 Furthermore, cynomolgus monkeys are well established in previous literature as scientifically appropriate subjects for such studies. 32,33 Non-naïve animals were included as recipients in this study due to limited subject availability and to most ethically and prudently steward the use of research animals. These animals had previously been involved in pharmacokinetic studies that involved administration of drugs intended to reduce relapsed alcohol consumption and for treatment of cocaine abuse.…”

“…6,8 However, the result in this study agrees with the reports that ALP serum levels were significantly higher in adult males than in the adult females. 2,5,8 One young mature male monkey, with body weight of ies on cynomolgus monkeys also reported ALP values higher than 1000 IU/L. 8,13,14 The serum of monkeys also appeared yellowish suggestive of the free bilirubin circulating in the blood.…”
