Biological actions of curcumin on articular chondrocytes

Abstract: The available data from published in vitro and in vivo studies suggest that curcumin may be a beneficial complementary treatment for OA in humans and companion animals. Nevertheless, before initiating extensive clinical trials, more basic research is required to improve its solubility, absorption and bioavailability and gain additional information about its safety and efficacy in different species. Once these obstacles have been overcome, curcumin and structurally related biochemicals may become safer and more… Show more

“…NF-κB contributes to the increased transcription of COX-2 and other pro-inflammatory genes, such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Curcumin also increases the accumulation of glutathione, an important intracellular antioxidant, and inhibits the activity of inflammatory enzymes [37].…”

“…There is increased release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mainly nitric oxide (NO), peroxynitrite (ONOO À ), and superoxide anion radicals (O2 À ). Other inflammatory mediators such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), produced by synovial monocytes, and prostaglandins 2 (PGE2) are also involved in the pathophysiology of the disease [6,15].…”
