Biological control of onion basal rot caused byFusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae

Abstract: Basal rot disease of onion is caused by Fusarium oxysporum Schlechtend: Fr. f. sp. cepae (Hans.). Biocontrol agents were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of onion cultivated in different places of Tamil Nadu, India. Efficacy of various biocontrol agents was evaluated for the potential to manage the basal rot of onion in vitro. Among the tested isolates of Trichoderma sp., T. harzianum (TH 3) gave the greatest (83%) inhibition and Pseudomonas sp. (Pf 12) exerted significantly the greatest (75%) reduction of m… Show more

“…Another widely used strategy to restrict Fo-induced damage is the use of resistant plant varieties [97]. However, this resistance is not stable over the long term [98], and because of the problems caused by such approaches, the use of bacterial isolates that act as antagonists to Fo as sustainable alternatives [76,[99][100][101], and the data from our work corroborate this perspective.…”

“…A similar trial was conducted in India where FBR could be managed significantly (85%) by a mixture of T. harzianum (TH3) and Pseudomonas sp. (Pf12+ Pf27) isolated from the rhizospherical soil in naturally infected onion fields (Malathi 2015). T. harzianum KUEN 1585 (commercial product, Sim®Derma) has been shown to be effective in prevention and control of FBR in onion both in vitro and in pot experiments.…”

“…to control Fusarium rot of lentil and found out both reduction of disease severity and growth enhancement. According to the investigation carried out by [37], onion basal rot caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cepa could be effectively controlled with soil amendment with Trichoderma spp.…”
