Biostimulation of Anaerobic Digestion Using Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (IONPs) for Increasing Biogas Production from Cattle Manure

Abstract: The effect of synthesised IONPs employing a nontoxic leaf extract of Azadirachta indica as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent for increasing biogas and methane output from cattle manure during anaerobic digestion (AD) was investigated in this study. Furthermore, the UV-visible spectra examination of the synthesized nanoparticles revealed a high peak at 432 nm. Using a transmission electron microscope, the average particle size of IONPs observed was 30–80 nm, with irregular, ultra-small, semi-spherical … Show more

“…When the zeta potential approaches zero, it indicates optimal conditions for the aggregation of solids. Colloidal particles carrying the same electrical charge experience electrostatic repulsion, which causes them to repel each other, resulting in a stable colloidal system [ 27 ]. External energy is required to overcome this repulsion between the particles leading to the destabilization of the colloidal system [ 28 ].…”

“…This comprises conventional tree cutting into natural wood, sawmill wood deposits, and some timber handling industries, as well as rural vitality crops, rural build-ups, and garbage. Because bioenergy is a natural and economical source of energy storage, energy stored in it can be implemented at any moment [14,28,29]. Biomass, constituting 55% of renewable energy and over 6% of the global energy supply, ranks as the fourth most significant renewable energy source worldwide [30], following coal, oil, and natural gases [3] Biomass is produced by using photosynthetic vegetable matter.…”

“…Its annual consumption of bioethanol amounts to 2.6 million tons, which represents around 4.0% of the global consumption [13]. The production of bioethanol has challenges in terms of food security and limited availability of land suitable for cultivating non-food plants [14]. The main obstacle for bioethanol production is in ensuring a sufficient supply of raw materials.…”

“…ZIF-8 nanoparticles can be compounded into fibrous membranes with PLA well by the electrospinning technology, showcasing a biomimetic mineralization feature on the composite membrane. Zeta potential, one of the key properties of materials, can affect cell adhesion [32]. A high absolute value of zeta potential can increase the repulsive force between materials and cells and reduce their adhesion [33].…”
