Long-baseline bistatic radar systems have been investigated and built in the past, but shortrange tactical applications of bistatic radar have not been explored in such detail. This paper briefly introduces the concept of bistatic and multistatic radar, compares the features of longbaseline and short-baseline systems, and describes a demonstration system designed to facilitate investigations into short-range tactical bistatic radar operation at X-band. This system, which is designed to be fully portable, features a phased array receiver with high-bandwidth digital beamforming, which can be used with a wide choice of modulations (pulsed and continuous), including high-PRF operation.
