“…1 Map of Santos estuary with collection sites and pollution sources; empty circles collection sites, filled circles pollution sources dredging. Site B (23°54.659′ S, 46°20.464′ W; Caneus Island) is under the influence of Santos harbor, and according to Kummrow et al (2006), domestic sewage is the only direct identified pollution source. Site C (23°52.597′ S, 46°22.583′ W) is located in front of a still mill, being the most contaminated area; it receives discharges from the steel mill plant and sewage, and according to Kummrow et al (2006), the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can reach 347.55 μg/g of sediment (dry weight).…”

“…This area was considered an example of environmental degradation in the 1970s. However, measures taken by the Environmental Protection Agency of São Paulo State (CETESB) resulted in significant improvement in the water quality, although the sediments and biota are still contaminated (CETESB 2001;Kummrow et al 2006).…”

“…Those aromatic amines have been oxidized by the rat S9 mix and subsequently N-acetylated by the bacterial acetyltransferases. The lower mutagenicity observed without S9 could be explained by the direct acetylation of the same aromatic amines as demonstrated for 2-aminoanthracene by Kummrow et al [2006b]. Extract fractionation followed by bioassays, such as in EDA (Effect Direct Analysis) according to the procedures described by Brack [2003] could help in the identification of which compounds are present in the bile of the fishes analyzed in this study.…”
