BOP Reliability monitored Real Time

Abstract: The BOP is a complex construction with multiple parts and systems integrated. Any single failure will affect the overall functionality of the BOP. A key question will always be whether a particular failure has such an adverse effect on the overall functionality that the BOP needs to be pulled for repair and hence drilling halted. The presentation will outline how a BOP is broken down into a detailed fault tree. The fault tree is modeled in the software tool RiskSpectrum® originally developed for assessing proc… Show more

“…The BOP is the second barrier of well control. The primary barrier is the hydrostatic pressure provided for the weighting of the drilling mud to counterbalance pressure from the reservoir (Alme et Huse, 2013). According to Sattler (2013, p. 1) "although not the primary resource used by the driller for well control, they are correctly understood as one of the last line of defenses".…”

“…Current technologies can provide an accurate failure effects analysis of BOP reliability based on failed components in a matter of minutes (Huse and Alme, 2013). This type of software is commonly found in the nuclear industry to assess risk based on failed components.…”

“…As a secondary barrier during drilling, the blowout preventer (BOP) is designed to close the well annulus or the drill pipe (Cai et al 2012). In deepwater and ultradeepwater drilling operations, the BOP is latched onto a wellhead, situated on the seabed (Huse and Alme 2013).…”

“…The blowout preventer (BOP) is one of several barriers in the well to prevent kicks and blowouts and is the most important and critical piece of equipment as it is the last line of protection against blowouts during well interventions (Januarilham 2012). It may be defined as one or more valves installed at the wellhead to prevent the escape of pressure, either in the annular space between the casing and the drill pipe or in the open hole during drilling or completion operations (Huse and Alme 2013).…”
