Bovine Nasal Granuloma (Atopic Rhinitis) in Victoria Experimental Reproduction by the Production of Immediate Type Hypersensitivity in the Nasal Mucosa

Abstract: The Australian type of bovine nasal granuloma (bovine atopic rhinitis) was reproduced clinically, grossly and histopathologically in 7 of 9 experimental cattle by subjecting them to repeated acute episodes of immediate-type hypersensitivity on their nasal mucosa over periods of several months.

“…The cause of the chronic inflammatory changes in nasal granuloma is also obscure. A disease similar to nasal granuloma has been produced by repeated application of ovalbumen to the nasal mucosa of an animal immunised with ovalbumen in Freund's incomplete adjuvant [10,11]. During the course of this experimental disease a rising titre of skin-sensitising antibody developed, which led the authors to the conclusion that type I hypersensitivity is the sole pathogenic mechanism in both the experimental and natural diseases.…”

“…Experimental transmission of nasal granuloma has not been accomplished, either by enforced contact between animals or direct inoculation of material from lesions. Lesions similar to those of nasal granuloma have been produced by repeated intranasal application of ovalbumen to an animal immunized with ovalbumin [10,11].…”

“…Our own case was readily distinguished from bovine nasal granuloma on the basis of size and number of nodules, histopathology, haematology and aetiology. [7][8][9] With regard to the classification of these nasal diseases we suggest the term, bovine nasal granuloma, 7-9 is inappropriate because of its difference from the other granulomas. We therefore propose it should be categorised as 'bovine allergic granular rhinitis'.…”

“…Atopic rhinitis would be passible of experimental reproduction by means of a immediate type hypersensitivity in the nasal mucosa 8 . The microbial allergens might be identified by simultaneously monitoring the pasture particle content and assessing nasal eosinophilia in cattle with the disease 1 .…”
