Bovine Nasal Granuloma: Gross Microscopic Lesions

Abstract: The anterior nasal mucosa of 21 cattle had small closely-packed polypoid nodules. These had a distribution pattern similar to that of inhaled particles. Acute inflammatory changes consisting of eosinophil infiltration, mast cell and globule leucocyte hyperplasia, and oedema were frequent in the epithelium, terminal gland ducts and adjacent lamina propria. Epithelium over nodules was metaplastic to non-keratinising stratified squamous, whilst epithelium of terminal gland ducts was metaplastic to mucus-secreting… Show more

“…Our own case was readily distinguished from bovine nasal granuloma on the basis of size and number of nodules, histopathology, haematology and aetiology. [7][8][9] With regard to the classification of these nasal diseases we suggest the term, bovine nasal granuloma, 7-9 is inappropriate because of its difference from the other granulomas. We therefore propose it should be categorised as 'bovine allergic granular rhinitis'.…”

“…The anterior nasal mucosa has small closely-packed polypoid nodules which are composed of granulation tissue covered by acanthotic squamous epithelium with abundant mast cells and eosinophils. The neck of mucous gland ducts are also made up of metaplastic pseudostratified columnar epithelium [3].…”

“…The frequent occurrence of large numbers of eosinophils in nasal tissues and secretions of animals with bovine nasal granuloma is the principal evidence for the involvement of Type 1 hypersensitivity (Cell and Coombs 1968) in the pathogenesis of the disease (Pemberton and White 1974;Carbo-nell1979). Nasal eosinophilia is not persistent, suggesting that White 1974 ;Carbonell 1979). This raises the possibility of monitoring clinical activity by quantitation of eosinophils in nasal secretions.…”
