“…The course was taught at the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education in Novi Sad in 2017. Given the fact that the literature (Chun 2004;Lew 2011) confirms that dictionaries are not used in language teaching as much as might be necessary, the course was innovative for three reasons: (1) it required the use of dictionaries for teaching standard English-based sports terms in Serbian as a teaching resource, not as a reference book, (2) it emphasized the teaching of the standardization of sports terms, which is not a common practice in ESP teaching, although it is highly desirable, and (3) it promoted the development of contact linguistic competence, which is stressed in literature as an essential component of an ESP course (Prćić 2014). This paper reports on the effectiveness of a new teaching method employing dictionaries as an aid for teaching the standardization of English-based sports terms in Serbian. The research was conducted among the students of a sports faculty in 2017 by means of a questionnaire distributed to the students both at the beginning of the second half of an ESP course and again at its end. Its aim was to measure the students' progress related to the acquisition of standardized sports terms in Serbian as an indicator of the effectiveness of the new teaching method. The findings generally indicate a certain degree of improvement of the students' knowledge of standardized sports terminology, though a less than satisfactory amount of progress regarding their linguistic competence. Even though the outcomes did not fully meet the goals set in advance, they do provide solid arguments for further efforts in developing and monitoring dictionary use in teaching the standardization of English-based sports terms in Serbian within the ESP curriculum and, even more importantly, for the systematic education of dictionary usage as part of the mother tongue curriculum.

Лексика српског језика убрзано се мења под све већим утицајем дигиталних медија додавањем нових речи и израза. Уплив англицизама је, са једне стране, природан вид богаћења лексике српског језика, међутим постоји и дугорочна опасност да ће туђице драматично променити структуру језика. Овакав утицај огледа се у синдрому миленијумске бубе, који је први дефинисао Твртко Прћић. Посредством дигиталних медија, појава миленијумске бубе усталила се као нешто потпуно природно у комуникацији путем интернета, али и ван њега. Примери англосрпског могу се наћи свуда на интернету, почевши од наслова страница, преко буквалног превођења израза, језичких конструкција, огласа и читавих сајтова, до крајње безазлених позајмљеница на интернету, које заједнички чине да српски језик на интернету буде угрожен. Циљ овог рада јесте приказивање тренутне ситуације везане за коришћење англосрпског, указивање на могуће дугорочне последице по српски језик у будућности, као и представљање могућих решења за овај проблем. Резултати истраживања показали су да је тенденција коришћења енглеских конструкција и англицизама у све већем порасту, као и да се они, иако неприлагођени српском језику, користе у истој мери и да у сличним ситуацијама замењују српске конструкције.

The concept of English as the nativized foreign language – or ENFL, for short – was first proposed in 2003, at the 13th International Conference on British and American Studies, in Timişoara, Romania, in a presentation entitled ‘Rethinking the status of English today: is it still a purely foreign language?’, and subsequently published as Prćić, 2003 and 2004. Identified and described in these papers are new, additional properties of English, which have developed over the past few decades, concurrently with the establishment of English as the first language of world communication and as today's global lingua franca (for accounts of this phenomenon, see Jenkins, 2007; Mauranen & Ranta, 2010; Seidlhofer, 2011). Viewed from the perspective of the Expanding Circle (Kachru, 1985), English can no longer be considered a purely, or prototypically, foreign language, usually characterized by three defining properties: not the first language of a country, not the official language of a country and taught as a subject in schools (cf. Richards & Schmidt, 2002). Three newly emerged defining properties of English, over and above the three customary ones, set it uniquely apart from all other purely foreign languages and they will be briefly summarized below (for more extensive discussions, see Prćić, 2003, 2004, 2011a: Chapter 2, 2011b, 2014).
