Burnout in Palliative Care Nurses, Prevalence and Risk Factors: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Palliative care nurses are exposed to hard situations, death, and duel feelings in their daily practice. These, and other work stressors, can favor burnout development. Thus, it is important to analyze the prevalence and risk factors of burnout in palliative care nurses and estimate its prevalence. A systematic review and meta-analysis was done with quantitative primary studies. n = 15 studies were included with n = 6 studies including information for the meta-analysis. The meta-analytic prevalence estimation … Show more

“…In a 2017 meta-analysis on emergency nurses [ 66 ], the estimated prevalence of EE was 31% (95% CI = 20–44), 36% (95% CI = 23–51) for DP, and 29% (95% CI = 15–44) for LPA. In palliative care nurses, the estimated meta-analytic prevalence was 24% (95% CI = 16–34%) for EE, 30% (95% CI = 18–44%) for DP, and 28% for LPA [ 67 ]. A meta-analytic study on oncologists estimated the pooled prevalence rates for MBI subscales of EE at 32%, DP at 24%, and LPA at 37% [ 68 ].…”

“…These specific conditions render them vulnerable to burnout and this study aimed to help reduce the incidence of burnout by exploring the variables that may lead to it [ 25 ]. Occupational variables, e.g., having workplace commitment, work freedom, possibilities for development at work, influence, and meaning of work, followed by psychological variables, e.g., being less extroverted and sociable, were identified as the most important in the burnout onset [ 28 ].…”

“…It is often pointed out that burnout, decreased job satisfaction, high turnover (11,26,28), and other negative outcomes are common among nurses and other health professionals in palliative care setting, but there is little empirical evidence to support these statements. Quite the opposite, most research still shows that palliative care professionals, including nurses, experience similar or even lower levels of stress and burnout than health professionals working in other settings (for review see 15,[29][30][31]. According to a recent systematic review with metaanalysis by Gόmez-Urquiza et al (15), the prevalence of different burnout dimensions among palliative care nurses is between 24 % and 30 %.…”

According to a recent systematic review with metaanalysis by Gόmez-Urquiza et al (15), the prevalence of different burnout dimensions among palliative care nurses is between 24 % and 30 %. These are mainly associated with occupational (workload, work environment, relations with patients and family) and psychological factors (personality traits such as extroversion and neuroticism, meaning in life).…”
