Calcium signaling in vertebrate embryonic patterning and morphogenesis

Abstract: Signaling pathways that rely on the controlled release and/or accumulation of calcium ions are important in a variety of developmental events in the vertebrate embryo, affecting cell fate specification and morphogenesis. One such major developmentally important pathway is the Wnt/calcium signaling pathway, which, through its antagonism of Wnt/beta-catenin signaling, appears to regulate the formation of the early embryonic organizer. In addition, the Wnt/calcium pathway shares components with another non-canoni… Show more

“…In addition to the canonical Wnt pathway, two non-canonical Wnt pathways exist: the planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway (Fanto and McNeill, 2004) and the calcium pathway (Slusarski and Pelegri, 2007). Especially, ROCK has been shown to mediate the PCP pathway (Marlow et al, 2002).…”

“…67 WNT/CA 2+ PATHWAY The Wnt/Ca 2+ pathway may function as a critical modulator of both canonical and Wnt/JNK/PCP pathways. 1 Wnt/Fz (specifically Wnt-5a, Wnt-11) 68,69 activates phospholipase C via the trimeric G protein, resulting in the generation of diacylglycerol and inositol triphosphate. The latter increases intracellular Ca 2+ levels and Ca 2+ fluxes.…”

“…Ion channels, integrin signaling, and the primary cilia have all been implicated in transducing the external biophysical environment of chondrocytes into electrical and/or chemical intracellular signaling (7)(8)(9). Specifically, intracellular Ca 2+ signaling has emerged as a common regulatory mechanism for controlling gene and protein expression (10)(11)(12).…”
