Can Doppler ultrasonography twinkling artifact be used as an alternative imaging modality to non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography in patients with ureteral stones? A prospective clinical study

Abstract: We aimed to evaluate the use of twinkling artifact (TA) on color Doppler ultrasonography (USG) as an alternative imaging modality to non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) in patients with ureteral stones in this prospective study. Totally, 106 consecutive patients who had been diagnosed with ureterolithiasis by CT were enrolled in this prospective study. A urinary system color Doppler ultrasonography was performed on the same day with CT by an experienced radiologist who was blinded to the CT scan. TA… Show more

“…Since this artifact depends on the parameters of the device and the frequency of the ultrasound emission,[22] in this study, the settings and parameters of the device were similar in all of the patients. In the present study, there was a significant positive relationship between twinkling artifact and the size of kidney stone.…”

“…However, because the prevalence and recurrence of renal calculus have increased over time, many patients are subjected to repeated CT scanning for the detection of small stones, and experience a risk of radiation-related adverse effects [12][13][14]. Thus, as an economic and safe diagnostic tool, ultrasound plays an increasingly important role in the diagnosis of acute renal colic [15]. Recent studies reported that for the diagnosis of urolithiasis, ultrasound has a sensitivity of 90-93% and a specificity of 95-100% [8].…”

“…Сопоставление результатов ультразвуковых доплеровских исследований с данными бесконтрастной КТ позволило многим исследователям определить показатели эффективности выявления АМ для диаг ностики нефролитиаза. Так, АМ был выяв лен у 86,8% пациентов, у которых он был зафиксирован при бесконтрастной КТ [59].…”
