Capturing the Complexity in Advanced Technology Use: Adaptive Structuration Theory

Abstract: DeSanctis and Poole contribute to the organization sciences in two distinct ways. First, they insightfully probe and characterize the deep structures that exist within both the technological artifacts and the work environments within which these artifacts are applied (within the context of a given technology-group decision support systems). Second, they describe and illustrate innovative strategies for collecting data on these structures. In doing so, the authors have laid an extremely strong foundation for fu… Show more

“…This paper addresses this research gap and extends adaptive structuration models (DeSanctis & Poole, 1994) with cultural factors that shape the exchange of OER in open e-Learning systems. Qualitative and quantitative data are used to elaborate on the significance of these factors.…”

“…This study focusses on asynchronous activities. Asynchronous exchanges of open knowledge resources refer to the taking and adapting of OER for own learning means and to the creating and publishing of OER for other's learning means (DeSanctis & Poole, 1994;Hollingshead, Monge, & Fulk, 2005;Giddens, 2001;.…”

“…Past research on advanced technologies suggests that the outcomes of a technology depend more on how it is used by people than the technology itself (DeSanctis and Poole, 1994). Thus the layout of this research work incorporates five distinct patterns that are adoption drivers, benefits, business processes, value chain activities, and implementation challenges.…”

“…Furthermore, emphasis is placed on how the designed system shapes the user's behaviour. There is, however, a body of thought that argues that technology not only shapes the behaviour of users, but users in turn shape how the system comes to be instantiated through use (Chae and Poole 2005;DeSanctis and Poole 1994;Orlikowski 1992). From this interactionist perspective, system designs are not fixed at the end of the formal design process (Carroll 2004).…”
