Show more

“…This finding is in line with the literature which states that the coordinated suction is fully established by the 37 th gestational week. 4,13,17 In relation to tongue cannulation, although this study did not show significant differences regarding this variable, its importance for good suction is highlighted, 24,25 as this dynamic function, at a proper positioning, especially the newborn's head posture, is directly related to the effective grip, which facilitates tongue movement in the oral cavity. 18,24 It is noteworthy that tongue cannulation is a difficult variable to measure, but its observation is part of the clinical routine to evaluate newborn's suction performance.…”

“…In view of our findings, the induction of an alertness state previously to bottle or breastfeeding, may increase the chances of a successful oral feeding. Non-nutritive sucking stimulation is an oral motor-sensorial method that, among other benefits, can facilitate the alertness state and contribute to a better oral feeding performance (27,29,30) . Hence NNS stimulation is understood as a useful strategy in order to wake the infant up.…”

“…SNN, in the speech therapy context, is used to fortify the oral musculature, regulate the states of consciousness, facilitate digestion and the regulation of the sucking-swallowing-breathing (SDR) 13 functions. Nutritive sucking (SN) shall only occur when the newborn is able to receive volume, observing sucking blocks, time and number of sucking associated to force and rhythm in addition to coordination of the SDR 14 functions.…”
