Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in clinical practice

Abstract: Objective To evaluate and describe indications, mainly diagnoses and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging findings observed in clinical practice. Materials and Methods Retrospective and descriptive study of cardiac magnetic resonance performed at a private hospital and clinic in the city of Niterói, RJ, Brazil, in the period from May 2007 to April 2011. Results The sample included a total of 1000 studies performed in patients with a mean age of 53.7 ± 16.2 years and predominance for male gender (57.2%). The majo… Show more

“…CMRI has already been validated utilizing the methods currently available in the cardiological practice with comparative analyses and longitudinal evaluation for prognostic characterization of patients. Currently, the clinical utilization of this method is already quite consolidated ( 19 ) . As the myocardial perfusion evaluated by CMRI under stress is normal, the patient presents with a low rate of future cardiovascular events.…”

“…7,8 Late-gadolinium enhancement (LGE) CMR has been used extensively in a large number of studies as the technique of choice for detection and measurement of myocardial fibrosis. [9][10][11][12] In patients with I-MI, therefore, CMR has been established as the gold standard imaging method for the assessment of RV function and myocardial fibrosis. [9][10][11][12] This study aimed to evaluate the association between myocardial fibrosis and RVD in patients with I-MI, using CMR.…”

“…The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has increased in the last years, both for the greater availability of apparatuses and its wide application in different clinical settings ( 1 ) . This method is considered as the gold standard for acquisition of gadolinium-enhanced abdominal images ( 2 ) , cardiac images for cardiac mass and volume quantification ( 3 ) , and is also widely used in the evaluation of joints, allowing for direct visualization of relevant anatomical structures, including ligaments, menisci and periarticular soft tissues.…”
