Cardiac Troponin I in Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Abstract: Measurement of plasma cardiac troponin I concentration ([cTnI]) is a sensitive and specific means for detecting myocardial damage in many mammalian species. Studies have shown that [cTnI] increases rapidly after cardiomyocyte injury. The molecular structure of cTnl is highly conserved across species, and current assays developed for its detection in humans have been validated in many species. In this study, [cTnI] was quantified using a 2-site sandwich assay in plasma of healthy control cats (n = 33) and cats … Show more

“…The serum cTnI amounts continued to increase from day 7 after the infection and reached the maximum amount when animals were euthanized. cTnI is considered to be the best biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of cardiac disorders in animals (Adin et al, 2005;Cornelisse et al, 2000;DeFrancesco et al, 2000;Herndon et al, 2002;Karapinar et al, 2010;O'brien et al, 2006). It seems the elevation of cTnI in the examined sheep was the sign of heart damage in experimental theileriosis.…”

“…Damage to the myocardium can also be evaluated with troponin measurement which has been reported in cats with cardiac disease. 23 However, SVT in humans precipitates an elevated troponin value in the absence of myocardial damage 24,25 ; whether or not this occurs in cats in unclear. Consequently, the clinicians managing this case questioned the diagnostic value of troponin and elected not to have levels measured.…”
