Cardioprotective Effect of the Aqueous Extract of Lavender Flower against Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury

Abstract: This study was conducted to evaluate the cardioprotective property of the aqueous extract of lavender flower (LFAE). The myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of rat was prepared by Langendorff retrograde perfusion technology. The heart was preperfused with K-H solution containing LFAE for 10 min before 20 minutes global ischemia, and then the reperfusion with K-H solution was conducted for 45 min. The left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) and the maximum up/downrate of left ventricular pressure (±… Show more

“…Beneficial effects of NAC on ischemic injury of the human and rabbit hearts have been previously reported [54] . Also, the other antioxidants (lavender flower and tribulosin) showed cardioprotective effects by means of reduced levels of myocardial injury markers in CVE during ischemia-reperfusion injury [65] , [73] , respectively). Furthermore, it is obvious that levels of CK and LDH did not change following global ischemia of any durations comparing to control values.…”

“…Augmentation of endogenous antioxidants (SOD, CAT, thiol) has been recognized as an important pharmacological property, present in natural as well as many synthetic compounds like vitamin C. 39 , 40 This constitutes a major mechanism of protection against oxidative stress, offered by them. 41 , 42 The most abundant ROS generated in living system is superoxide radical which is acted upon by SOD to produce hydrogen peroxide which in turn is inactivated by catalase into water and oxygen.…”

“…Clinical studies also support the antihypertensive effects of lavender aromatherapy (Hwang, 2006;Gultom et al, 2016). Both linalool and lavender essential oil/ extract have exerted cardioprotective effects in experimental models of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury (Wang et al, 2014;Ziaee et al, 2015;Zheng et al, 2017). The activation of Akt and the inhibition of GSK3b through the up-regulation of VEGF-B mRNA are suggested as potential pathways for linalool's cardioprotective effects (Zheng et al, 2017).…”
