In 1891, Edward A. Pace, a Catholic priest and first-generation psychologist, commenced a career at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Amidst the daunting challenges in being a professor and researcher, particularly at a newly established university, he thrust himself into a third role, apologist. Habits related to the Monsignor’s three roles have contemporary relevance for psychologically-trained Protestants; in this case study, we examine four notable practices. Dr. Pace modeled an appetence for wisdom in multiple disciplines, a keen awareness of rival worldviews, intentional ripostes to Catholic critics of scientific psychology, and last, unrelenting steadfastness to the Christian faith. To characterize the priest-psychologist, we present a brief biographical sketch and an overview of influential historical movements in the zeitgeist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries affecting his life. In addition, the aforementioned habits of Pace and applications for Protestants engaging in psychology in the 21st century are delineated.

ResumenSe debate sobre el establecimiento de culturas científicas en carreras de psicología argentinas. Se analizan el aporte de la psicología experimental francesa y la obra de Paul Fraisse a dicha causa. Se indaga la influencia que este modelo tuvo en el Instituto de Investigaciones Psicopedagógicas de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (San Luis, Argentina), donde en 1958 se inició una peculiar carrera de psicología. Se establecen puntos de contacto entre el programa experimental francés, la obra de Paul Fraisse, y la tarea institucionalizadora de Plácido Horas en el Instituto y la carrera de psicología de San Luis en el período 1956-1972. Se destaca la centralidad de la psicología como ciencia de la personalidad y del comportamiento en dicha institución.Palabras clave: Psicología experimental francesa; Paul Fraisse; carreras de psicología; evaluación de la personalidad; Argentina. AbstractWe discuss about the settling of a scientific culture within Argentine Psychology Programs. It is analyzed the contribution of French experimental psychology and Paul Fraisse's work to this cause. It is explored the incidence this scientific approach had at the Psychopedagogic Research Institute of the National University of Cuyo (San Luis, Argentina), where a peculiar psychology program was created in 1958. We characterize the connections between the french experimental program, the Paul Fraisse's work, and the Plácido Horas' institutionalization work at the Institute and the Psychology Program, in the period of 1956-1972. Psychology as a personality and behaviour science is highlighted as the main model resulting at this institution.

Psychoanalysis and the Catholic Church in Italy: The role of Father Agostino Gemelli, 1925–1953

Agostino Gemelli, a Catholic priest, psychiatrist, administrator, and educator, was an important figure in the early history of psychoanalysis in Italy. He was one of the few establishment figures to grapple with Freud's ideas in Italy during the first half of the twentieth century, a period during which Italy, compared to the rest of Europe and to the United States, was relatively impermeable to psychoanalysis. One of the factors that contributed to this was the opposition of the powerful Catholic Church, which identified in psychoanalysis a challenge to its authority. The author argues that Father Gemelli's shifting positions about psychoanalysis between 1925 and 1953 reflected the exigencies of his historical circumstances. Gemelli was able to identify in psychoanalysis an integrated view of the human condition in stark opposition to the brutal reductionism of psychiatry in Italy at that time, but also encountered in it elements intolerable to the Church. Examining specifically what it is that Gemelli could accept of psychoanalysis, and what needed to be rejected, between 1925 and 1953, illustrates the particular challenge posed by psychoanalysis to Catholicism in Italy.
