Cattle encephalon glycoside and ignotin reduced white matter injury and prevented post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus in a rat model of intracerebral hemorrhage

Abstract: The morbidity, mortality, and disability associated with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) secondary to intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) represent a global burden. To date, there is no effective therapy for ICH other than supportive care. In this study, we assessed the neuroprotective effects of Cattle encephalon glycoside and ignotin (CEGI) injection in a rat model of ICH with ventricular extension (IVH/ICH). The IVH/ICH rat model was induced via injection of type IV collagenase in the caudate nucleus of Spragu… Show more

“…Axonal degeneration after ICH has been observed in human ( 16 ) and mouse ( 23 , 62 ) brain samples. Moreover, ICH patients with a low Glasgow Coma Scale score exhibit clear loosening of myelin sheaths around axons ( 16 ).…”

“…Axonal accumulation of APP is a classic marker of axonal injury indicative of cytoskeletal damage (14,18). Demyelination can be reflected by a downtrend of MBP, a primary component of the myelin sheath (19). Mice in the SAH + vehicle group exhibited apparent decreases in MBP and accumulation of APP in the left hemisphere 24 h after SAH.…”
