Central sensitization in breast cancer survivors

Abstract: The goal of this study was to study central sensitization (CS)‐related symptoms in breast cancer (BC) survivors and to find if there are differences in clinical and functional variables. In this cross‐sectional study, 25 women aged between 32 and 69 years participated. CS pain was measured with the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI). Forty points was considered the cutoff value. Cancer‐related fatigue (CRF), Quality of life, functional capacity, and handgrip strength (HGS) was assessed. A 60% of BC survivor… Show more

“…CS symptoms assessment in BCS is essential in clinical and research settings. In this context, validated PROMS may be useful to identify and assess the CS symptoms, and monitor their progress in BCS 5,6,12 . Different elements, such as the measurement properties and feasibility of an instrument, and the population where the instrument will be used should be considered to decide which instrument is the best for assessing CS 27 …”

“…Central sensitization is often related to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis [8], osteoarthritis [8, 9], temporomandibular joint complaints [8, 10], fibromyalgia [8, 11], neck pain [12], headache [8], neuropathic pain [8], musculoskeletal complaints [8, 13], postoperative pain [8, 14], complex regional pain syndrome [8], visceral pain [8], cancer pain [15], and low back pain [16, 17].…”

“…Secondly, the psychiatric condition and sleep quality of the patients were evaluated with only yes/no questions, not inventories based on numerical scales. Another common feature of these diseases is that there is a considerable overlap between their accompanying key symptoms, such as fatigue, myalgias, sleep disorders, and depression, which has led researchers to consider CSS, a state in which the central nervous system amplifies sensory input across many organ systems and causes a myriad of symptoms [ 33 ]. In light of the findings obtained from this study, NCBP, whose etiology has not yet been fully elucidated, has similar key symptoms to the other components of CSS.…”
