Cerebrospinal fluid somatostatin in delirium

Abstract: SynopsisCerebrospinal fluid somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (CSF SLI) was determined for 67 elderly patients who met the DSM-III criteria for delirium and for 19 age-matched controls. As a group, and also when subdivided according to the type of delirium, severity of cognitive decline or the type of central nervous system disease, the delirious patients showed significant reductions of SLI compared with the controls, together with a declining trend associated with increasing cognitive dysfunction. These fin… Show more

“…Our findings suggest that positive effect of tacrine on cognitive abilities in AD may be partly mediated by direct or indirect somatostatinergic mechanisms. Although CSF SLI is reduced already in very early stages of AD (39), detection of CSF SLI cannot, however, be used as a diagnostic tool in AD because reduced levels of SLI have been reported in various neurological and psychiatric disorders (40,41,42).…”

“…In a search for objectivity in this diagnosis, the authors who studied this disorder continue to point out the necessity to think about these different influences [16][17][18] . Like Freudenburg, when we have to make an assumption in a situation of high consensus, large experience and few obstacles, this assumption has less probability of error; conversely, with low consensus, little experience and many obstacles, the probability of error increases greatly 19 .…”

“…The mechanisms whereby the various causative factors may induce delirium have not been fully worked out, but delirious patients have abnormalities in CSF neurotrans mitter levels [8,9], In addition, increased slow wave activity and disruption of the normal alpha rhythm in EEG has also been demonstrated in delirium [10].…”
