Chapter 1: Cultivating Researcher Integrity: Virtue-Based Approaches to Research Ethics

Abstract: This chapter presents a virtue-based approach to research ethics, which both complements and challenges dominant principle-and rule-based ethical codes and governance frameworks. Virtues are qualities of character that contribute to human and ecological flourishing, focusing on the dispositions and motivations of moral agents (in this case, researchers) as opposed to simply their actions. The chapter argues for the usefulness of 'researcher integrity', in the context of increasing interest internationally in '… Show more

“…At the beginning of this chapter, it was noted that the concept of research integrity, or researcher integrity, has become prominent in recent years, especially in official documents relating to research governance (see Banks 2015Banks , 2018; see ▶ "Research Ethics Codes and Guidelines", this volume), but that there is some uncertainty about the meaning of the term. It was proposed that it should be treated as an overarching concept that incorporates both those issues that have been central to most discussions of research ethicssuch as minimizing harm, preserving privacy, and respecting the autonomy of research participantsand those epistemic values and virtues that relate to the goal of research: the production of knowledge (see Hammersley 2020).…”

“…The term "research integrity" (or sometimes "researcher integrity") has come to be widely used in recent years, especially in official documents relating to the governance of scientific research (see Banks 2015Banks , 2018; see ▶ "Research Integrity: Procedures", this volume). Its current popularity is quite closely related to the rise of ethical regulation; and there are problems with what it is taken to entail that arise from thisa tendency to interpret it as requiring the "following procedures or protocols," or "adherence to principles."…”

“…Open science and the push to commercialize research have raised questions about intellectual property rights and the need to verify scientific quality through expose to counter-argument and conventional peer review (Nowotny et al 2003). This balancing act between research integrity (Banks 2018) and economics-driven interaction is reality for researchers. Policy-makers and university managers have marketed co-creation with external arguments but failed to tackle the practical need for tools to manage the contradiction.…”

“…The contemporary review process lacks ways to develop the reflexivity and ethical sensitivity necessary to promote decision-making skills during ethical challenges and dilemmas [2]. Research integrity and using virtue ethics in research training underlie some initiatives seeking to address short-comings in the current system [3].…”
