Today there is a great demand in the market of wood-based panels like medium density fibreboard (MDF), plywood and oriented strand board (OSB). These boards provide functionality in various industrial fields from building to furniture production. All are produced from timber and some type of binding resin, the most often used in Europe are phenol formaldehyde (FF), isocyanate (MDI) and melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF). These resins guarantee sturdiness of the material but are toxic to humans and makes recycling of the wood-based panels very difficult. There are attempts of wood-based panels industry to transition away from fossil-based adhesives. Various resins have been developed using lignin and tannin or protein. Soy based adhesive SOYAD™ has already reached the market, other soy protein-based adhesives are integrated into ultra-low formaldehyde emission particle boards like Nu green 2® and Transform™. This paper gives an overview on bio-based adhesives that are used or have the potential to be used for wood-based panel production.

With increasing concerns about the production of sustainable materials, the field of wood-based materials still offers a critical challenge. Indeed, a close dependence on petroleum derivatives is still required, involving high consumption of non-renewable and toxic chemicals in the assembly of wooden parts. Herein, the aim of this research was to evaluate the potentiality of an entirely renewable tannin-based adhesive for particleboard production. Industrial quebracho (Schinopsis balansae) tannin powder was selected as a raw material and analyzed in terms of polyphenols, polysaccharides, and the total condensed amount. Furfural was proposed as a bio-sourced hardener to establish crosslinking between the flavonoid units and hence produce a resin. This formulation was analyzed in terms of viscosity and curing time and then applied to laboratory-scale single-layer particleboard production. The density, mechanical properties, and thickness swelling of the panels were investigated at different glue ratios and pressing conditions. It was observed that time has a higher impact than temperature on the internal bond, and panels pressed at 160 °C for a longer pressing time (>7 min) performed better than the boards obtained at a higher temperature. The registered values at 160 °C for 11 min of pressing of internal bond (0.37 MPa) and modulus of elasticity (1417 MPa) met the required standards for P1 panels according to European norms EN 312 (2010). Conversely, the modulus of rupture (4.9 MPa) did not satisfy the requirements suggesting the need for the use of additive or post-treatments. Considering the results achieved, quebracho–furfural adhesives are an interesting base for bio-based adhesive formulations.

Partition materials based on wood particles and inorganic materials bonded with synthetic adhesives have a negative impact. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the manufacturing and characterization of particleboard as partition material using corn husk to substituted wood-based particles and water soluble chitosan (WSC) as adhesive to replaced synthetic-based adhesive. The WSC content was varied of 6%, 8% and 10% wt. The particleboards were manufactured under the pressure temperature variations of 160, 180 and 200 oC for 15 min, press pressure of 2.5 MPa and target density of 0.8 g/cm3. The physical and mechanical properties of particleboards improved in line with increasing WSC content up to 8% and pressure temperature above 160 oC. The value of MOR and MOE from boards bonded with WSC 8% and pressure temperature of 180 oC fulfilled the requirement of JIS A 5908 (2003). The sound absorption coefficient of particleboard bonded using WSC 6% was better than other boards. The particleboards absorbed sound at middle to high frequency (> 1000 Hz) and reflected sound at low frequency (80 to 630 Hz). FTIR spectrum shows that the absorption area around 3400 cm− 1 wavelengths is a little decrease in intensity due to with the increase of pressure temperature. Corn husk particleboard not yet classified as a heat insulator panel. This study suggest that corn husk is feasible to use for particleboard bonded using WSC adhesive as partition material.
