Characteristics of patients with subchorionic hematomas in the second trimester

Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the etiological characteristics of patients diagnosed with subchorionic hematoma. Methods: A case-controlled study was performed to compare characteristics of patients and controls. Via ultrasound examination, 47 pregnant patients were found to have subchorionic hematomas and 1075 had no evidence of subchorionic hematomas (controls). In the second trimester, patients were compared with regard to endocervical Chlamydia trachomatis and other vaginal microorganisms. R… Show more

“…However, its infectious frequency is believed to be around 10% on an average from a global perspective [1,2]. As compared to other studies with healthy women in Japan (~5.8% on average; 3.0-3.8% Tokyo [39,41]; 5.6% Fukuoka [42]; 8.3-8.8% Miyasaki [43,44]; 1.7% Nasushiobara [45]; 9.5% Wako [46]), the prevalence of C. trachomatis in Sapporo City that we estimated (14.3%) was unique. Our result is supported by a previous study showing a C. trachomatis detection frequency of 11.3% in Sapporo [47].…”

“…Abnormalities in pregnancy, such as intrauterine bleeding or sub-chorionic hematomas are often associated with threatened miscarriage, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy. Sub-chorionic hematoma is a sonographically detected anechoic area with a falciform shape that increases the risk of spontaneous abortion [131]. Placental dysfunction, insufficient angiogenesis, and chronic inflammation are underlying causes of early pregnancy bleeding, and these factors can even result in preterm labor or perinatal mortality [132].…”

“…According to the literature, the incidence of SCH in the first trimester in a general obstetric population is 3.1% [4], the frequency of SCH in the group with threatened spontaneous miscarriages is 5.2% [1], and the frequency of SCH is significantly higher in the in vitro fertilization group (22.4%) [5]. Additionally, pregnant women with SCH in the first trimester show changes in vaginal flora in the second trimester, which suggests a possible association with subchorionic hematoma and vaginal flora change [6].…”
