Characteristics of shunting effect in resistance spot welding in mild steel based on electrode displacement

Abstract: Shunting effect of resistance spot welding is evaluated based on the electrode displacement signals. The shunted welds in mild steel with different weld spacing were produced. The results showed that the weld spacing and nugget diameter were polynomial-correlated, and the minimum welding spacing of 20 mm can be derived from the results. Both the peak value and gradient of electrode displacement in the weld stage indicated strong correlations with the nugget diameters of shunted welds. Additional shunt path was… Show more

“…RSW has been commonly used in the automobile industry. RSW is a technology that produces a weld without filler metal by means of a high-intensity current, under simultaneous pressure application [13,14]. This process is described as the heat generated by the welding current used to reach the temperature required for the welding of two or more materials, while the resistance at the welding site is applied.…”

“…A different approach, where relative changes in this value over time are linked to the nugget diameter could potentially lead to improved results. Such approaches are successfully applied to both dynamic resistance as well as electrode displacement signals [9].…”

“…Farson [8] showed that electrode displacement curves could be correlated to both nugget height as well as nugget diameter. Xing [9] later applied displacement-based monitoring on shunted welds, and correlated displacement signal features to the final nugget diameter. The same dataset was used to successfully correlate the final weld indentation and the dynamic resistance curves to the nugget diameter of these welds.…”

“…Para verificação da qualidade, destacam-se alguns métodos que acompanham o processo de soldagem em tempo real, tais como o ultrassom [9,10], deslocamento do eletrodo [11,12] e raio X [13]. Em outras situações consegue-se a análise por meio de instrumentos convencionais, muito utilizados na indústria [14], como também por métodos que permitem avaliar diversas características geométricas do produto soldado, como a análise por imagem.…”
